How to pick out the right shade and tone for interiors?

Your home is your very own personal space and it is one sport which should always keep you relaxed and act as a retreat from your hectic schedule.

Yes, you have designed a house or maybe renovated it. But how to choose a colour scheme for your home? This task is actually quite hard because it requires a lot of planning and testing because at the end of the day- you'll be seeing these colours almost everyday and living among them.

What impact does the choice of colour in interior design really make?

You might have heard about the phrase " the psychology of colour" and it is absolutely true. Sometimes you might have observed that you feel really calm and relaxed after spending some time in a neutral or light coloured space. Or you might feel quite energetic after staying in a vibrant coloured room.

So the colour you use in interior design can impact your mood more than you realize, so it is very important to be sure of the kind of atmosphere you are going for while choosing the colours.

You can choose something intense and bold like red, something warm and positive like yellow, peaceful and relaxing like blue, something comfortable like green or any other colour. And of course, you can always choose to play around and mix and match different hues.

How to choose the right shade for your interiors- must know tips.

Monochrome is evergreen!

When we talk about the term "monochrome", it does not necessarily mean black and white. Monochrome means going for one single colour. The best part is, this trend is extremely easy to pull off and if you think it's going to be boring, you can use different shades and tints of the colour to keep it interesting. You can choose something bold and bright to draw attention or go with something mellow like neutrals.

Take light into consideration.

Remember that a single shade of colour might look different when sunlight falls on it and when you view it under artificial light. Be hundred percent sure about the shade you are looking for and run patch tests to check how your chosen shade looks in different kinds of light. Consider the position of the windows and lights in the room before choosing the final shade.

Make your furniture participate in the process.

Your furniture and decor elements play an important role in the room and apart from testing the paint colours on the walls, you should also test them against the furniture and other decor elements to get an idea whether they complement each other.

Keep the concept of harmonious colours in mind.

Research the colour wheel thoroughly and choose colours that sit side by side on the colour wheel. These are either known as contrasting or harmonious colours and they can easily become friends with each other. This rule is particularly helpful when you are trying to adjust bright colours and looking for something which looks harmonious, but can still work as a nice contrast.

Concentrate on the kind of finish you want.

Knowing the kind of finish you want to go for is as important as choosing the shade. Today most of the paints are stain resistant and people mostly choose the satin finish because it is easy to clean. Semi gloss and high gloss finishes are also great for the panels of a door or any molding profile. There is a wide variety of sheen and finishes available today which can create unique visual effects on the walls. Just keep a note of the fact that the more glossy the finish is, the more attention it will draw to itself.

Research about undertones.

You can be really surprised how undertones can help you choose paint colours for your home interiors. If you do not know what undertones are, they are the shades hiding behind your favourite colour. And the only way to get it accurate is to research a lot about it and sample the colour. Know the difference between a warm undertone and cool undertone and analyze the effect it can have on the entire look of your interior. This will help you in making the perfect choice.

The popularity of dual tones.

Dual tones are extremely popular and they literally work in every room. Go for colours that contrast each other to make an impact. You can also colour three walls in the same shade and choose an accent wall to create a focal point. The other three walls can be of a neutral shade and the accent wall can be done in a vivid colour which will give a dramatic look.

Go for testers before you buy actual paint.

Buying an entire can of paint when you are not particularly sure about the shade, is not a good idea because in case you end up not liking it, the entire product will go to waste. So go for tester paints in a few different colours and shades and paint a limited area on different walls to see how it looks when different light falls on it throughout the day.

Let your creativity flow.

There is no one fixed answer to the question-  how to choose paint colours for your home exterior or how to choose paint colours for your home interior. Let your creativity do the talking and showcase your personality through the different colours and decor for the different rooms.

The colour you choose for your interior or exterior matters a lot because it is a great way to show your aura and since you will be spending a lot of time in that space, the colours will affect your mood as well. Don't be afraid to step into the world of paint colours and if you are still hesitant about it, you can always play safe and start with something small and later on experiment according to your preferences.
